Along on the Trip – My role as your Trusted Advisor
When asked how I build trust-based client relationships, I use a familiar analogy - it is like taking a driving trip together.
Before our journey begins, I make certain I fully understand the current situation (the starting point - "Here") and the client’s desired goals, objectives and timeframes (final destination - “There”) for each. With this background, I am able to advise as to whether my client can really expect to get “There” from “Here” when they desire. If not possible, then we will carefully review the reason(s) for the shortfall and what alternatives could be acceptable. All along our trip together, we will review our progress and make changes as necessary to stay on the right path.
My client will be in the driver’s seat throughout our journey with me right next to them guiding them by providing advice, recommending alternative routes if necessary, suggesting when to take a rest stop along the way or when to put the “pedal to the metal”. At other times I may be educating, providing counsel, answering questions and offering encouragement when needed.
Client “destinations” typically may include properly diversifying a portfolio, allocating investment assets (only after considering client risk temperament, time horizon and investment objectives), or saving enough for an enjoyable retirement. It could also be to fund a child or grandchild’s college education, develop a retirement income-stream plan, or sustain the family’s lifestyle in the event of the client’s death or disability. The client could be looking for assistance in estate planning, charitable giving, tax-saving strategies or buying a vacation home. Clients may be very anxious about ensuring they will not be a financial burden to their family if they become physically or mentally incapacitated and require extensive long-term care. Above all else, they want to know how they can maintain their dignity and independence.
In summary, being my client’s "trusted advisor" means to continually add value while we experience the journey together.
